SUMMARY:Chris Cain Band
DESCRIPTION:“That boy can PLAY the guitar!” – BB KING Legendary Blues Guitarist \nChris Cain was born in San Jose\, California in 1955. His parents were huge music fans and shared their love of blues\, jazz\, and popular music with Chris. His African American father and Greek mother both loved music and had a huge record collection. His father first took Chris to see B.B. King when Chris was three\, and\, says Cain\, “we never missed another show.” Thanks to his parents’ musical passion\, young Chris saw almost every blues\, jazz and rock artist that came through town\, many of them repeatedly: James Brown\, Albert King\, Johnny Winter\, Jimi Hendrix\, even The Beatles. He picked up his first guitar at age eight and learned lick after lick\, song after song. He’d listen to his father’s records over and over until the music had seeped into his soul. \n“Chris Cain is for real. He’s a great blues player with an intensity that keeps you on the edge of your seat\, wondering what he’s going to do next. Plus he knows how to write a song you haven’t heard before\, full of humor and insight. I am a stone fan.”  – ROBBEN FORD Iconic Blues Guitarist \nCain’s rough-and-tumble East San Jose neighborhood was a melting pot of soul\, rock\, blues\, jazz and Latin sounds\, and he absorbed it all as his guitar playing improved. By the time he was in his teens\, he was starting to get noticed. In 1976\, local San Jose singer and harmonica player Gary Smith gave Cain his first. \n“Hands down my favorite blues player on the scene today. He’s an absolute blinder of a guitarist\, with the voice of B.B. King and the chops of Albert King.” – JOE BONAMASSA  3 Time Grammy Nominee Blues/Rock Guitarist \nAmong the greatest compliments a musician can receive is praise from his fellow artists. With more than three decades of touring and fourteen previous albums\, master blues guitarist and vocalist Chris Cain has earned his reputation as a musician’s musician. Since his first release in 1987\, Cain has created his very own blues sound inspired by his heroes–B.B. King\, Albert King\, Ray Charles\, Albert Collins\, Grant Green\, and Wes Montgomery. His jazz-informed blues guitar playing is fiery\, emotional\, and always unpredictable. His vocals–gruff\, lived-in\, and powerful–add fuel to the fire.Chris Cain has received two BMA nominations for 2023 including Best Contemporary Blues Artist and Guitarist of the Year. In 2022\, Chris Cain was honored with four BMA nominations including Best Male Blues Artist and Best Blues Album of the Year for his recent Alligator Records release\, Raisin’ Cain. Living Blues Radio awarded Raisin’ Cain as the second most played contemporary blues album of 2021 in America. The album hit #1 on the blues charts in America and Australia\, #2 in the UK and #3 in France\, remaining in the top 10 for most of the year. The song from the album\, I Believe I Got Off Cheap\, won the International Songwriters Competition for Blues. \nTruly a world-class blues artist\, Chris Cain has toured all over the world\, sharing his indelible style in over 20 countries throughout Europe\, South America\, New Zealand\, and Australia. \n  \nClick here for more info about the 40th San Jose Fountain Blues & Brews Festival.

SUMMARY:Andre Thierry & His Accordion Soul Music
DESCRIPTION:Andre Thierry\, a name highly regarded amongst industry figures and fans throughout the music scene. True to his culture and love of music\, he has crafted a career well beyond his years as an artist. Andre’s French Creole heritage is deeply rooted in Louisiana although he was born and raised in Northern California. At a very young age\, he embarked on a path with distinct knowledge and extraordinary talents. \nAndre grew up experiencing the French Creole (La-La) dances his grandparents held at their church parish\, St. Mark’s Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians Louisiana had to offer traveled to California to play at these dances. The exposure allowed him to develop his love for traditional French Creole music. By age twelve\, Andre formed his own band\, “Zydeco Magic”. Self taught\, Andre’s repertoire grew by leaps and bounds as he was regularly invited to play with visiting bands\, such as the late John Delafose and many local Zydeco and Cajun bands\, including the late Danny Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra). \nNow\, in his 30’s\, he has already been deemed a legend. There is widespread agreement that he is an exceptional\, multi-dimensional musician who has a finely honed ability to merge his accordions with musical mastery. \n \nThe Washington Post called Andre “A master at pumping out fast\, funky rhythms on an instrument not usually associated with earthy syncopation. A versatile student of the music\, Thierry can’t be lumped into Zydeco’s old-school R&B-influenced camp or its nouveau\, rap-inspired one: He and his band\, lay down both soulful\, traditional slow-dances and bottom-end-booming kinetic groovers.” \nMichael Tisserand\, author of The Kingdom of Zydeco\, considered the definitive book on the history of Zydeco music\, wrote\, “In America\, great migrations produce great music. Just as Delta musicians took Highway 61 to Chicago and electrified their blues\, so did the Creoles and Cajuns migrate to California and establish vital dance communities. Now the California scenes rival anything back home in Louisiana\, and that’s due to players like Andre Thierry\, a standard bearer for the new generation. Thierry is among the best of both the West Coast and the Gulf Coast\, and he combines youthful vigor with a mature appreciation for his inherited tradition.” \nSome of Andre’s most groundbreaking artistic works have resulted when awareness and experience from distant genres and unrelated forms collaborated through an evolution of French Creole\, Zydeco and Accordion Soul. Undoubtedly\, Andre’s style isn’t conventional\, he and his accordions provide a signature sound by creating magnetic sonic landscapes. The rhythmic songs played drive an atmospheric blend\, giving his band a powerful edge\, naturally building a dedicated following through constant shows\, touring and a string of recordings like “It’s About Time\,” “A Whole Lotta Somthin” and “Are You Ready To Learn”. \nSinging\, song-writing and producing with a collective of artists\, while their individual contributions are discernible\, Thierry creates the transformative effects\, leaving his musical imprints on records like “Live! At the Woodshop”\, “Creole United\, Non Jamais Fait” and “Creole United\, Tu Kekchause A’ Korrek”. \nIn “Bouncin With The Blues” Thierry performs songs written or popularized by music legends that have inspired the acclaimed accordionist\, featuring songs from Howlin Wolf\, Muddy Waters\, Albert King and Clifton Chenier. Unforgettable performances with musicians Sammy Hagar (gritty hard Rocker) and David Hildago (influential Latin singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist) showcased fabulous fusion with Andre in his musical zone\, pumpin genre bending sounds\, breaking all accordion stereotypes. \nThe accordion defies all national and continental borders. Andre Thierry was the first American artist to perform in the Akkordeonale\, International Festival (Program 2016). Representing the USA — Impelling Blues with Creole Roots\, the accordion virtuoso celebrated with audiences touring Germany\, delivering awe inspiring performances\, coming together with musicians in a vivid interchange. Different as the cultural backgrounds were\, so were the musical approaches and styles. The only real common language was music\, creating a thrilling coexistence on stage. \nForthcoming about his journey\, Andre Thierry’s music creations are intoxicating and timeless. Enjoy the unfolding of this charismatic\, rising artist as he vibrates Accordion Soul with stimulating beats\, attracting any music lover to the dance floor! \nClick here for more info about the 40th San Jose Fountain Blues & Brews Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Thank you\, Poor House Bistro Studio\, for hosting this very cool Fountain Blues Foundation Fundraiser Party. Proceeds support the following Foundation goals: \n\nProvide a platform for blues musicians to find live music performance opportunities\, in a time of diminishing opportunities\nExpose the broader music community to the blues\, encouraging young artists/audiences of all ages to learn about the genre\nCreate opportunities for musicians to find mentorship and music industry experiences that can promote professional artistic growth\nPartner with local venues/merchants to promote the blues art form\nSupport economic development in San Jose by including local venues and merchants in Foundation programming\n\nWe have a great lineup! \n\n\nMaxx Cabello Jr. Band  7:30 – 9:00:  The American music flame will never go out as long as artists such as Maxx Cabello Jr. take the torch and keep it burning. This amazing guitarist\, soulful vocalist\, and prolific songwriter\, hails from the streets of the San Francisco Bay area where he is turning heads and bending the ears of the most jaded veteran musicians and music aficionados. Straight out of the South Bay\, this quiet-spoken\, polite college student turns into a powerful and captivating artist when he begins to play the guitar. We expect his star to be on the rise in the musical sky before long.\nJC Smith Band 5:30 – 7:00:  J.C. Smith Band brings you an electrifying musical experience. With music ranging from Jumpin’ Blues to Old School Soul\, this band can whip the most conservative audience into a crazed dancing machine. Over the years\, the San Jose native has emerged as a top Northern California bluesman who combines smooth\, soulful West Coast vocals with stinging guitar work marked more by grit than virtuosity. He performs with his high-energy seven-piece band on Saturday evening at Sly McFly’s.\nGary Smith & The Houserockers with special Guest Andy Just 3:30 – 5:00:  In January 1980 Gary Smith joined the Houserockers as the front man and leader. Overnight the Houserockers became the in demand blues band in the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas. Gary Smith & The Houserockers play a mix of blues styles\, ranging from the Chicago blues sounds of the 1950’s and early 1960’s\, to the jump blues and swing blues sounds from Texas and the West Coast\, the piano driven sound of New Orleans R&B.\nSweet HayaH 1:45 -3:00:  Lead vocalist\, Nehal Abuelata\, emphasizes that her love for music first began as an adolescent curious about finding who she was as an individual. She began hosting small shows for her family where she performed dance routines\, and incorporated lip-syncing\, role play\, as well as acting. Nehal exemplifies that Sweet HayaH is not conformed to one solo genre\, but a rather split mix of Retro-Soul\, Reggae\, Funk\, and Earthly Rock\, with a hint of Afro-Latin uniqueness.\nJefe Meduri & The Poor House Band 12 – 1:15:  For years\, Jeff Meduri’s Poor House Band has been the house band at the Poor House Bistro\, playing groove heavy rhythm and blues with a touch of rock\, country\, and jazz thrown in.\n\nFountain Blues Foundation\,  a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization\, is organized to preserve and promote the blues in Santa Clara County.  Learn More \nSpicy homemade Cajun jambalaya with sausage and shrimp \nNo host food from Poor House Bistro’s New Orleans style cuisine. \nAdvance general admission tickets are $75 and include two drink tickets and a Ron Thompson CD.

SUMMARY:Tommy Castro and the Painkillers
DESCRIPTION:Tommy Castro and the Painkillers \nIt’s been a big year. Tommy Castro swept three major awards at the 43rd Blues Music Awards\,  Castro\, 67\, took the B.B. King entertainer of the year award\, album of the year for Tommy Castro Presents a Bluesman Came to Town and\, with his band\, the Painkillers\, band of the year. The album reached No. 2 on Billboard‘s Blues Albums chart. \n“The hardest thing to do\,” says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro\, “is be yourself\, take some chances and bring your fans along with you.” Throughout his long\, constantly evolving career\, guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tommy Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring\, growing and creating new music\, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Since his solo debut in 1994\, he’s made 16 albums—the last seven for Alligator—each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery\, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll\, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues\, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk\, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Blues Revue declared\, “Tommy Castro can do no wrong.” \nFor Castro’s album\, a roots music odyssey entitled Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town\, he tells a timeless story. This special project was composed by Castro along with Grammy Award-winning producer Tom Hambridge. Through its 13 songs\, A Bluesman Came To Town tells the tale of a young man working on his family farm who gets bitten by the blues bug. He masters the guitar and heads out on the road seeking fame and fortune\, only to find what he’s left behind is the treasure he’s been looking for. Each memorable song—from the blistering title track to the pleading Child Don’t Go to the hopeful I Caught A Break to the emotional Blues Prisoner—stands on its own\, as well as contributing to the larger story.  The album has garnered him six Blues Foundation Blues Music Award nominations\, including Blues Entertainer of the Year (an honor he has previously won in 2008 and 2009). \nBorn and raised in San Jose\, California\, Castro started playing guitar at the tender age of ten – initially inspired by Mike Bloomfield\, Eric Clapton\, and Elvin Bishop – he started the inevitable journey into the roots of his heroes and discovered and quickly became enamored of B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Elmore James\, Muddy Waters and Freddie King. His vocal styling came from constant listening to Ray Charles\, Wilson Pickett\, James Brown and Otis Redding.  After honing his chops playing with numerous Bay Area bands\, Castro landed a gig playing guitar for the San Francisco Dynatones\, who were then signed to Warner Bros.  The two-year stint augured well for Castro\, as he played to the biggest crowds he had seen to that point and had backing artists as diverse as Carla Thomas and Albert King. In 1993\, Castro formed his own group and released his first self-produced album “No Foolin” – garnering him the Bay Area Music Award for Best Club Band in 1993 and 1994\, and winning 1997 BAMMY’s for Outstanding Blues Musician and Outstanding Blues Album (for his Blind Pig Recording “Exception to the Rule”). Castro and his band followed these successes with a three-year stint working as the house band on NBC’s Comedy Showcase\, which aired after Saturday Night Live. \nOver the past three decades\, Castro has continued to win over fans in the Bay Area and beyond\, with critically acclaimed world tours and award-winning albums that have garnered numerous awards\, including four Blues Foundation Blues Music Awards in 2009 for his Alligator Records debut “Hard Believer” – including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award that same year.  Prior to the pandemic sidelining music industry tours\, Castro was successfully touring in support of his 2019 “Killin’ it Live” album\, which peaked at #3 and spent 18 weeks on the blues album charts. \nThis is a not-to-be-missed homecoming for one of San Jose’s most beloved blues sons\, who is raved by the Washington Post as conjuring “Soul-baring\, roadhouse-meets-church\, Memphis guitar-licks…gritty voice…Southern colors and rootsy textures.” \nhttps://www.tommycastro.com/

SUMMARY:Tia Carroll and The Greaseland All Stars
DESCRIPTION:Bay Area blues singer supreme Tia Carroll’s sassy style of storytelling\, powerful voice and command of the stage have drawn comparisons to Tina Turner\, Koko Taylor\, Etta James and Aretha Franklin.  But Carroll has her own unique star power and blends influences from her East Bay\, California upbringing – combining a raw mix of sultry jazz\, gospel and soulful blues. \nOver the last two decades\, Carroll has quietly accumulated one of the most impressive entertainment resumes in the Bay Area and has become one of the most sought-after female singers on the West Coast – and beyond. Carroll has headlined venues and festivals all over the world with her former band The Hipnotics – sharing stages with legends Ray Charles\, Jimmy McCracklin\, Elvin Bishop and Sugar Pie DeSanto. She’s earned a reputation for her sizzling stage show – and it only seems fitting that Carroll was part of the production team who compiled the soundtrack and video documentary on the life history of female blues pioneer Ma Rainey with the Bay Area Blues Society’s Ronnie Stewart and Michael “Spiderman” Robinson. \nIn 2021\, Carroll teamed up with Grammy-Award Winning musician Jim Pugh’s Little Village Foundation and Kid Andersen of Greaseland Record Studios\, to finally release her first-ever U.S. recording. “You Gotta Have It!” is a talent-packed collaboration and includes some of the most powerful recordings of her career.  Tia’s emotive vocals truly mesh well together with the piano/organ playing of Little Village’s Jim Pugh and the jaw dropping\, yet tasteful guitar of Kid Andersen. The collaboration includes guest appearances by many blues greats (Charlie Hunter and Rick Estrin)\, including fellow Little Village Foundation bands like The Sons of Soul Revivers (SoSR). Former Fountain Blues Festival main stage performers – SoSR – added their awesome gospel soul stirring vocals to many of the tunes\, including their heartfelt rendition of the Staples Singers’ classic “Why Am I Treated So Bad?” and Z.Z. Hill’s deep soul blues ballad\, “I Need Someone.”  Carroll will be joined on stage at this year’s Festival with a band compiled from many of The Little Village Foundation’s talented blues/gospel family\, a set that will guarantee to have you dancing non-stop\, and leave you begging for more. \nhttp://www.tiacarroll.net/

SUMMARY:San Jose Jazz Winterfest: Chris Pierce
DESCRIPTION:Fountain Blues Foundation co-presents with San Jose Jazz the powerhouse blues/Americana guitarist Chris Pierce in the SJZ Break Room in downtown San Jose as part of Winter Fest 2022. He shot to national prominence in 2021 with his version of “No One” from the hit ABC series “A Million Little Things.” Chris’ biting lyrics and fierce vocals are reminiscent of protest songs of the 1960s but speak to our own times.
